You are invited to peruse the Swap Shop for a new piece of knitwear
Which handknit will speak to you?
I’ve been hard at work the past few weeks setting up my new Swap Shop for handknits.
In a piece of cosmic synchronicity, I received an email earlier this week from Brooklyn Tweed that they are also thinking about what to do with knitwear collections that get too large.
They decided to host an auction-style sample sale. There are four more days left in their auction and bidding is already substantial. Sweaters currently range from $180 to $325, and cowls range from $100 to $140. I’m sure the final prices will likely be a bit higher.
These prices speak to the value of handknit items.
There is nothing different from the samples in the Brooklyn Tweed auction and the items in my Swap Shop.
The knitting—your knitting—is just as professional, with tension just as even, and yarn just as (if not more) valuable. Everything in the Swap Shop has natural fibers like merino wool and cashmere, silk and yak. It’s all beautiful, and the execution of these patterns is clearly top-notch.
Items in my Swap Shop are at no cost, other than shipping, because the person who listed it—sometimes me, but just as often you—we believe that it’s possible for knitting—our knitting—to create a community of care. A community that says: knitting matters. That making things by hand matters. And that it matters so much that we don’t actually want to put a price on it.
I don’t mean to throw any shade to Brooklyn Tweed for doing an auction-style sale. Rather, I want you to see the deep value, both monetary and intrinsic, in the items that you are offering and being offered in the Swap Shop.
A link to the shop is below, behind a paywall. Paid members of this newsletter community are getting 10 days of advance shopping before I open things up to everyone and introduce the Swap Shop on social media.
It’s just $6 a month to upgrade, and even if you don’t find something you want, you will be helping support this burgeoning community. I think it’s well worth $6.
PS: A reminder that if funds are tight, you can request a one-year (free to you) community-supported membership here. No questions asked. If what I’m doing, and how we are building community, feels like your people? We got you.
