The season of witches, stitches, and all things eerie is almost here …
Let’s knit some tentacles!
I think knitters are going to fall into two very tidy camps with regard to knitted tentacles. Those who say, nope, and those who say, you had me at tentacle!
I am in the latter category, so when my friend and colleague Hunter Hammersen approached me about the idea of doing a kit for her Gripping pattern, I was all in.
These knitted tentacles are sweet and eerie at the same time — just right for a witchy, stitchy Halloween season! I’ve put together the sweetest, most delightfully eerie kit ever for you to knit your own tentacles. It has every supply you need, already thought of, included, and ready for you.
I’ve made two types of kits: a luxe version with supplies for 4+ tentacles at $120, and a simple version with supplies for 2 tentacles at $70. (The pricing changed a bit since what I announced on Sunday, as I did a final check on the materials requirements.)
Allowing for quantity differences, each kit has:
All the yarn you need, in a variety of bases and colors. All beautifully divided into half or quarter skeins.
100% wool stuffing (because wool is so much more lovely than fiberfill, and in small-ish quantities like this, the cost difference is small)
Aluminum wire
A few very strong rare earth magnets
Keepsake postcard & original art tag, so you never forget what your kit will make, in case you’re not able to cast on immediately
Canning lids of various sizes (this forms the tentacle base and helps it stand upright)
Handmade stitch markers
A live, guided knitalong where I share my own peer tips and tricks
A foraged sea stone for good tentacle mojo
You’ll only need to add some rocks or coins to weigh down your tentacle(s). (I’ve gathered one sea stone for you, but no one wants to pay for me to gather and ship full a box of rocks!)
Seriously, these kits are just so, so good!
Knit some tentacles for the sheer delight of it
You can make your tentacles useful by having them hold a crochet hook or an Apple pencil, or another small thing that you might be prone to lose, but, honestly? Their appeal is simply that they exist. They’re small and whimsical and delightful. And delight is enough of a reason to make anything.
I’m not sure what I’m going to use my tentacles for. I just know I’m going to make a few more. Maybe for my fireplace mantle (✓). Maybe for my coffee table. Maybe as part of a larger Halloween tableau. They just make me smile!
Kits are available right now, and if my inventory sells out, I’ll convert to preorders. I will happily make kits for whoever wants one. Preorders, of course, will take a few weeks to ship, but the message here is: There’s enough for everyone!
I love everything Hunter creates, and for you to join your beautiful yarn and talents with her--you two have created amazing kits! Thank you for the reminder to just have fun!!
Got my kit! I’m excited to be able to knit something frivolous for once. I always knit something practical like socks, or a sweater, etc., but for once I’m going to play a little. Not sure where I’ll put them yet, or what they’ll hold, but it’s about having fun.
