I am not surprised your test knit process seems so fair and takes into account the amount of time test knitters put in.

I have only ever done a test knit once--for Sundara Yarn. She had a very tight deadline and was very specific that she needed quick turnaround. She provided the yarn and a $50 gift certificate in return for the finished cowl. It was a good experience. I had a friend who test knit for a well known designer and was paid $100 per knit but had to buy the yarn and then send in the garment. I know her "wage" was far below minimum!

I don't volunteer for test knitting anymore--I am a "standard" size so my size is usually taken. I also like to see the finished garment before testing--I don't want to knit it if I'll never wear it and the older I get the pickier I get about my hand knits.

Test knits aside--Thank you for your use of less well known designers. I am currently knitting the Mika vest from the kit I purchased. The details on this vest are next level. The turned hem, double knit armhole facing, and double knit buttonband set this garment apart from others I have knit. It is a joy to knit. I will definitely be looking at more of Kavitha's designs for future knits!

Thank you for all you do to make this a more inclusive world.

This is really fascinating - thanks for sharing! I’ve never been a test knitter before, though I have been tempted by some of the calls put out by designers on Substack. Ultimately though, I know that I can’t actually commit to making something on a timeline. If the pattern is for a garment, there’s also a high likelihood that I would have to (or at least want to) modify it to fit me, which kind of defeats the point of test knitting a pattern.

From a consumer point of view, I would prefer for patterns to be test knit in multiple yarns because that’s a better sign of whether the pattern is going to work than one that is exclusively tailored for a single yarn.
